Iwase Koichi on juuri karannut nuorisovankilasta. 12-vuotias poika oli joutunut sinne hänen äitinsä liityttyä uskonnolliseen kulttiin, Nirvanaan, yhdessä Koichin ja hänen pikkusiskonsa Asakon kanssa. Koichin isoisä oli ottanut Asakon huostaansa, mutta jättänyt Koichin vankilaan. Isoisä oli luovuttanut Koichin suhteen uskoen tämän olevan niin paljolti kultin aivopesemä, ettei pystyisi enää elämään normaalissa yhteiskunnassa. Paetessaan Koichi aiheuttaa auto-onnettomuuden. Yuki, samanikäinen tyttö, on onnettomuusautossa, ja tämä onnettomuus pelastaa tytön kuskilta, joka on pannut hänet käsirautoihin tarkoituksenaan hyväksikäyttää tyttöä. Iwase Koichi has just escaped from a juvenile detention center. The 12-year-old boy had been placed there because the religious cult his mother Michiko had joined, called Nirvana, along with Koichi and his younger sister Asako, had committed murderous attacks on the general public. His grandfather had taken custody of Asako, but had left Koichi in detention, giving up on him as too brainwashed by the cult to live in normal society. As he flees, he runs in front of a car on a country road, causing it to crash. It just so happens that Yuki, a girl just his age, is in that car and the crash saves her from the driver, who had handcuffed her with the intention of molesting her. Yuki had run away from home after her mother died and was left in the custody of her abusive father. Deciding to pay Koichi back for saving her, she gets some money and clothes from a friend and joins him on his trip to Tokyo to get his sister back.

Shibuichi Setsuko: GLASS RABBIT (Garasu no usagi, ガラスのうさぎ, 2005) 86 min

Animaatio GLASS RABBIT perustuu Takagi Toshikon bestselleriin. Vuonna 1977 julkaistua romaania on myyty yli 2.1 miljoonaa kappaletta ja se on käännetty useille eri kielille. GLASS RABBIT kuvaa elämän ja kuoleman kauhuja toisen maailmansodan Tokion pommitukisissa. Kirjailija toivoi paljastavansa nykyisille sukupolville sodan pelot ja vaikutukset, jotta ihmiset taistelisivat rauhan puolesta. Takagi Toshiko oli 12-vuotias ja asui Tokiossa sodan aikana. Romaani on jokseenkin omaelämänkerrallinen, sillä kirjailijan äiti sekä kaksi siskoa menehtyivät pommitusten sytyttämissä tulipaloissa. Myös hänen isänsä kuoli sodassa. Animaatio julkaistiin kunnioittamaan Hiroshiman pommituksen, 6.8.1945, 60-vuotismuistopäivää.



The animation GLASS RABBIT is based on the best-selling novel by Takagi Toshiko. The novel, originally released in 1977, has sold more than 2.1 million copies. The novel has been translated into various other languages. GLASS RABBIT portrays the horrors of life and death during the air raids on Tokyo during World War II. The author wished to express to current generations the effects and fears of war so that people will struggle for peace. Takagi Toshiko lived in Tokyo and was 12 years old during the war. The novel is somewhat autobiographical as the author's mother and two sisters were lost in the fires from an air raid as they were evacuating to outside of Tokyo. Her father was killed by the machine guns from a US fighter plane. The animation was released to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945.

Toyoda Toshiaki: HANGING GARDEN (Kuchu teien, 空中庭園, 2005) 113 min

Kyobashin perhe asuu esikaupunkialueella ja he vaikuttavat onnellisilta, mutta todellisuus on toinen. Kenelläkään perheessä ei saisi olla salaisuuksia, silti jokaisella perheenjäsenellä on omat salaisuutensa.

Isä Takashi on tavallinen palkkatyöläinen, joka tekee lisätöitä saadakseen rahat riittämään. Äiti Eriko työskentelee lisätäkseen perheen tuloja. Takashi ja Eriko eivät ole harrastaneet seksiä viiteen vuoteen, Takashi tahtoisi mutta Erikoa ei kiinnosta. Takashilla on salaisesti kaksi rakastajatarta, jotka molemmat hallitsevat häntä niin fyysisesti kuin henkisesti. Tytär Mana on teini, joka perheen tietämättä ei enää käy koulussa. Hän kuluttaa aikaansa lorvailemalla ostoskeskuksessa, lempimällä poikaystäviään tuntihotelleissa ja poseeraamalla nuorten lehdissä. Nuorempi lapsi, poika Ko, pakenee tilannetta virtuaalimaailmaan, mutta ymmärtää, että hänen perheessään on jotain vikaa.



Living in a suburban area in present-day Japan, the Kyobashi family looks like they are happy, but on the inside the reality is different. The family rule is that no one has any secrets, yet each member has their own secrets. The façade slowly begins to crack.

Takashi, the father is a regular salaried worker, chasing one job after another to make ends meet. Eriko, the mother, works to supplement their income. Eriko and Takashi haven't had sex for five years. He wants to but she is not interested. Takashi secretly has two mistresses both of whom dominate him emotionally and physically. Mana, the daughter, is a high-school student, yet secretly she doesn't attend classes anymore. She spends her time hanging around a shopping center, going to love hotels with her boyfriends, and posing for idol magazines. The younger child, Ko, escapes into his computer, but he realizes that something is wrong with his family.

Izutsu Kazuyuki: WE SHALL OVERCOME SOMEDAY (Pacchigi, パッチギ, 2004) 119 min

Elokuvan tapahtumapaikka on Kioto, Japani vuonna 1968. Elokuvan taustalla on 1960-luvun kuohunta ja japanilaisten ja korealaisten suhteet Japanissa. Tarinan alussa kiotolaisen lukion karateryhmän jäsenet loukkaavat kahta korealaisen lukion tyttöä. Japanilaiset pojat saavat moitteet omalta opettajaltaan ja kahden pojan, Kosuken ja Norion, käsketään mennä korealaiseen lukioon sovinnon tekoon: ystävyysottelu jalkapallossa. Korealaiset pojat pelottelevat Kosukea ja Norioa, mutta he toimittavat kutsun otteluun.



This film takes place in 1968 in Kyoto, Japan. The background of the film is the turmoil of the 1960s and the relationship between Japanese and Koreans in Japan. The story begins when members of the karate group of a Kyoto high school insult two girls from a Korean high school. A war breaks out when the Korean girls get the boys from their school, led by a boy named Lee Ang-son, to seek revenge. The Japanese boys are reprimanded by their teacher, and two boys, Kosuke and Norio, are told to go to the Korean high school and make a peace offering: to have the two schools play a friendly match of soccer. Kosuke and Norio are intimidated by the Korean boys but they deliver the invitation.

Sasabe Kiyoshi: HALF A CONFESSION (Han-ochi, 半落ち, 2004) 122 min

Entinen poliisi ja etsivä Soichiro tunnustaa paikallisella poliisilaitoksella murhanneensa vaimonsa kolme päivää aiemmin. Entisen kollegan Shigin kuulustelussa hän selittää, että shokki, joka koitui heidän poikansa kuolemasta leukemiaan, sai Alzheimerin taudin puhkeamaan hänen vaimossaan, joka lopulta johti vaimon pyytämään miestään lopettamaan kärsimyksensä. Tiukasta kuulustelusta huolimatta hän kieltäytyy jyrkästi selittämästä liikkeitään niiden kahden päivän ajalta, jotka ovat kuluneet vaimon kuolemasta hänen tunnustukseensa. Former police detective Soichiro (Terao Akira) turns himself in at his local police station and confesses to the murder of his wife (Harada Mieko) at their home, three days earlier. Under questioning by his former colleague Shigi (Shibata Kyohei), he explains that the shock of their son's death from leukemia brought about the onset of Alzheimer's disease in his wife, which ultimately led her to ask Soichiro to end her suffering. However, despite rigorous interrogation, he steadfastly refuses to explain his movements in the two days between his wife's death and his surrender. An ambitious reporter (Tsuruta Mayu) begins her own investigation, and the ensuing trial becomes a standoff between a zealous prosecutor (Ihara Tsuyoshi) and a young judge (Noshioka Hidetaka) with a personal stake in the defendant's plight. A verdict is reached, but it is only then that the sad truth of the missing two days emerges. Winner of Best Film and Best Actor at the 2005 Japan Academy Prize, this powerful and socially conscious drama was responsible for an unprecedented surge in marrow donor registrations.

Sakamoto Junji:BOKUNCHI – MY HOUSE (Boku n chi, ぼくんち, 2002）115 min

Ittan ja Nitan äiti Kyoko palaa kotiin Suihei-saarelle oltuaan kauan poissa. Tällä kertaa hän on siellä esitelläkseen poikansa heidän isosiskolleen Kanokolle. Kaikilla kolmella lapsella on eri isä ja tämä olisi heidän uuden elämänsä alku. Eräänä päivänä sisarukset häädetään kodistaan koska talo on yllättäen myyty. Kyoko (Ohtori Ran), mother of Itta and Nita, comes back home to Suihei Island after a long absence. This time she's there to introduce the two young boys to their big sister, Kanoko (Mizuki Arisa). All three are born of different fathers and this the beginning of their new life together. The poverty of Suihei Island is coloured with various unique residents such as Kohei, a punk who's gentle to women and children, and Tetsu-ji, an iron scrap scavenger. One day, the three siblings are evicted because of the unexpected sale of the deed to their house, and end up living in an apartment. In order to support them, Kanoko starts working at a filthy brothel which the older of the two brothers, Itta, can't bear. Wanting to be independent, Itta leaves the island. Kanoko forgives errant mother Kyoko, who caused all this trouble, and also admits Nita is actually her own son and decides to raise him as such. Directed by Sakamoto Junji, whose name is highly acclaimed in the international film festival circuit. The film is based on the Saibara Rieko's best-selling comic series, which received the Bungei-Shunju Comic Award.

Hashiguchi Ryosuke: HUSH! (Hush!, 2001) 135 min

30-vuotias Naoya elää avoimesti homon elämää. Hän kuluttaa aikaansa vilkkaassa baarissa, harrastaa yhden yön juttuja, ja työskentelee kummallisessa eläinkaupassa, joka palvelee rikkaiden eläinten ystävien päähänpistoja. Hän on onnellinen mutta hieman tyytymätön.

Katsuhiro on myös 30-vuotias ja homo, mutta hänen elämänsä ei voisi olla erilaisempi. Hän on tutkimusinsinööri labrassa, jossa hän on salannut homoutensa niin tehokkaasti, että kollega Emi on rakastunut häneen. At 30,Naoya lives an openly gay life. He hangs out with Fiends at a lively bar, experiences love as a series of one-night stands, and supports it all by working in an eccentric pet shop that caters to the whims of wealthy animal lovers. He is happy, yet faintly dissatisfied.

Katsuhiro is also 30, and also gay, but his life couldn't be more different. He's a research engineer at a lab, where he has concealed his homosexuality, so effectively that Emi, a colleague, has fallen in love with him. Katsuhiro is too kind to reject her, but he feels trapped by his own dishonesty and confusion.

Asako is nearing 30. She makes crowns and bridges at a dental clinic where she holds herself aloof from the other employees. She's in the habit of having sex with strangers without taking any precautions against pregnancy or venereal disease. These three meets each other and their lives intertwine together.
