Kunnollinen opiskelijapoika Eddy (Josh Charles) muuttaa yliopiston

kampusalueelle holtittomamman Stuartin (Stephen Baldwin) seuraan.

Samaan kämppään on tungettu myös Alex (Lara Flynn Boyle), jota on

nimensä vuoksi luultu asunnonvälityspalveluissa vahingossa mieheksi.

Yhteiselo luokin pohjaa näppärälle rakkaustriangelille: Eddy

kiinnostuu Stuartista, joka kuitenkin haluaisi Alexia, joka puolestaan

tykkää Eddystä. Kaikki kolme päättävät kuitenkin pysyä yksinomaan

ystävinä. Lupauksen pitäminen voi kuitenkin olla vaikeaa... Threesome

esittelee kämppis- ja kampuselämän kirot ja ilot välttäen kamalimmat

komediakliseet. Päähenkilöiden keskinäinen kemia (pedissä ja sen

ulkopuolella) toimii mainiosti samalla kun vauhdikas ja hauska juoni

pitää yleisön halut ja aktiviteetin voimissaan.

Vastaanotollaan hän tapaa Jamien ja Jamesin. Heidän parisuhteessaan on

ongelmia. James ehdottaa suhteen avaamista kolmansille osapuolille.

Sofia suuttuu Jamesille ja nolosti paljastaa oman ongelmansa. James ja

Jamie päättävät tutustuttaa hänet ystävilleen. Sofia käy uusien

ystäviensä kanssa orgioissa Shortbus-nimisellä klubilla...

John Cameron Mitchellin (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) vasta toiseksi

elokuvaksi Shortbus on varsin rohkea. Mitchell onnistuu kuvaamaan

eksplisiittisiä seksikohtauksia ilman, että ne tuntuvat pornolta.

Kohtaukset ovat vain osa henkilöhahmojen elämää. Loppujen lopuksi

elokuvassa on enemmänkin kyse tunneongelmista kuin seksistä. Fiksut

näyttelijät ja improvisoitu käsikirjoitus yhdistyvät hienosti

elokuvassa. Mainio indie-soundtrack tunnelmoi elokuvan tärkeillä

hetkillä (Animal Collective, Yo La Tengo, The Hidden Cameras, The

Ark...).

Carla (Heather Graham) ja Louise (Natasha Gregson Wagner) odottelevat

poikaystäviään newyorkilaisen loft asunnon ulkopuolella. Hetken

juttutuokion jälkeen selviää, että he ovat tapailleet tietämättään

samaa miestä. He murtautuvat yhteisen poikaystävänsä, Blaken (Robert

Downey Jr.) asuntoon. Kun Blake palaa kotiin, alkaa pitkä kuulustelu,

jossa hän joutuu käyttämään kaiken charminsa selvitäkseen

tilanteesta...

Robert Downey Jr. loistaa Blaken roolissa valehtelevana

näyttelijä-laulajana. Ohjaaja-käsikirjoittaja Toback kirjoittikin

roolin varta vasten Robert Downey Jr.:a ajatellen. Käsikirjoitus on

täynnä yllätyksiä ja jännittäviä kohtauksia, joissa osin improvisoidut

vuorosanat sopivat täydellisesti kunkin näyttelijän suuhun.

Jean (Carl Parker) tapaa pariisilaisjuhlissa kauniin valkoisen

ilmestyksen Annen (Rebecca Brooke). Heti ensimmäisestä tapaamisesta

alkaen hän pääsee tutustumaan Annen alistamiseen. Vihdoin hän saa

kutsun myös ystävänsä Clairen (Marilyn Roberts) kartanoon, jossa Annea

rangaistaan entistä rajummin. Väkivaltaa tarjoillaan pieninä

annoksina, joiden avulla Jean hivutetaan askel askeleelta omien

seksuaalisten patoutumiensa äärelle.

The Image perustuu siveettömien ja moraalittomien tekojen analogialle

Catherine Robbe-Grilletin eroottisesta alkuperäisteoksesta, jonka

rakenteen ohjaaja Metzger säilytti aina mieskeskeistä näkökulmaa

myöten. Elokuva saati kirja eivät moralisoi aihettaan eivätkä siten

vesitä sanomansa inhimillistä vetovoimaa. The Imagen aikaansaama

efekti on todella tehokas. Ei ihme, että elokuva tunnustetaan

yleisesti yhdeksi kaikkien aikojen parhaaksi hardcorea sisältäväksi

kokonaisuudeksi.

Proper student boy Eddy (Josh Charles) moves into the university

campus area, sharing a dorm apartment with the more reckless Stuart

(Stephen Baldwin). Alex (Lara Flynn Boyle) soon enters the same

apartment because of her name has been mistaken as a man's in the

university housing department. Their life together becomes a nice

building ground for a love triangle: Eddy's interested in Stuart who

fancies Alex who in turn finds Eddy to be attractive. The three of

them make a pact to stay solely as friends. However, keeping the

promise proves easier said than done... Threesome presents the joys

and curses of student dormlife without resorting to the worst comedy

cliches. The three individuals share a perfect chemistry (in bed and

out of it) while a fast-paced and funny plot has no trouble with

keeping the audience active, alert and very willing.

Sofia is a married sex-therapeutist who has never had an orgasm. As a

therapeutist she meets Jamie and James, a gay couple who have intimacy

issues. James thinks their relationship should not be monogamous.

Sofia gets angry with James and confusingly reveals to them her

problem. They decide to introduce her to some of their friends and

suggest that she attends a weekly orgy held in Brooklyn at a club

called Shortbus...

Shortbus is John Cameron Mitchell's (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) second

feature film. His decision to portray explicit sex in a way that is

not exactly exploitative or even erotic, is both brave and new.

Shortbus ends up being more about emotional honesty than it is about

sex. Within the small-budget constraints Mitchell has managed a small

wonder. The smart and sensitive cast bonds well together with the

film's improvised script and a wonderful soundtrack (Animal

Collective, Yo La Tengo, The Hidden Cameras, The Ark...).

street while waiting for their boyfriends outside a Manhattan loft

apartment. After talking for a few minutes they realize they are

dating the same guy. They decide to brake into his – singer-actor

Blake's (Robert Downey Jr.) – apartment. Once Blake is home, they

start

to interrogate him about the situation they've found themselves in.

Blake, turns out, is a pathological liar, and tries to use his full

charm to save himself from this mess...

Robert Downey Jr. is deceivingly natural as Blake – a role James

Toback wrote specifically for him. So natural that it makes it hard to

distinguish between what's written, what's improvised and what's real

in this movie. James Toback's surprising and thrilling script is at

the heart of this little gem of a movie, but his direction of actors

is what makes the film.

At a party in Paris, Jean (Carl Parker) meets a beautiful white

revelation named Anne (Rebecca Brooke). From their very first meeting

Jean gets to know Anne through submission. Finally Jean is invited to

his friend Claire's (Marilyn Roberts) mansion where Anne is punished

even further. Violence is offered in small dosages, which helps Jean

to enter the abyss into his own sexual repressions.

The Image is based on the analogy of indecent and amoral acts of

Catherine Robbe-Grillet's erotic novel. Director Metzger kept the

novel's original structure, sustaining the focus of the male

protagonist. Both the film and the book avoid a morally judgmental

tone and even manage to translate a humane message. The Image's effect

on the viewer is very powerful, and it's no wonder that the film is

generally considered to be one of the best films ever made that

contain hardcore sexual content.
