Stephen Kingin 70-vuotissyntymäpäivää 21.9.2017 juhlistetaan ja edesmennyttä George A. Romeroa (1940–2017) muistetaan herrojen yhteistyönä syntyneellä modernin kauhun klassikolla Creepshow – yöjuttu (1982). Kyseessä on ensimmäinen Kingin itse käsikirjoittama elokuva ja Romeron menestynein ohjaustyö. 35mm-arkistokopiona nähtävää elokuvaa ei ole esitetty Helsingissä valkokankaalla yli 25 vuoteen.
EC-yhtiön 1950-luvun sarjakuville (Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror) kunniaa tekevä Creepshow – yöjuttu on episodikauhun ehdoton huippusaavutus. Kirkuvissa väreissä kuvattu, siirtyminä sarjakuvaruutuja hyödyntävä elokuva oli mustan humoristisen kasarikauhun keskeinen suunnannäyttäjä.
Elokuvan viidestä tarinasta toinen, The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, on Stephen Kingin uran näyttävin esiintyminen kameran edessä: kirjailija esittää meteoriitilta hirviömäisen tartunnan saanutta maalaisjunttia. Jaksoista unohtumattomin on viimeinen They’re Creeping Up On You!, karmiva torakkajuttu, jonka jälkeen ei tee mieli katsoa muropakettiin. Näyttelijäkaartiin kuuluvat Ed Harris, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, Hal Holbrook ja Adrienne Barbeau sekä Joe Hill, Kingin sittemmin niin ikään kauhukirjailijaksi varttunut poika. Maskeeraustehosteista vastaa alan kärkinimi, Romeron luottomies Tom Savini.

Though most have been cameos, in 1982 he co-starred in the George Romero-directed, five-part anthology movie Creepshow. (Romero, who died July 16 at age 77, pioneered the zombie apocalypse genre with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead. “There will never be another like you,” King tweeted about his fellow horror icon after learning of his death.) THR called Creepshow “a comic book come to life as a horror film” that offers “a potion that seems sure to bubble up with box-office results.” That turned out to be true: The $8 million Warner Bros. release ($20 million today) made $21 million domestically (now $53 million) and ranked first on its opening weekend.
