Tämän monet varmasti jo huomasivatkin, mutta Kaurismäen Laitakaupungin valot on valittu Cannesin elokuvajuhlien kilpailusarjaan. Saa nähdä kuinka hyvin elokuva pärjää ja jatkaako Mies Vailla Menneisyyttä-elokuvan menestystä. Ainakin kovassa seurassa pääsee kilpailemaan, kun ehdokkaana on mm. Pedro Almodovarin uusin elokuva

THE CANNES CLASSICS SELECTION

Press Release – May 4th, 2006



Since 2004, the Festival de Cannes has grouped together all of its initiatives in favour of heritage within "Cannes Classics". The goal of this programming, over and beyond those films in the Official Selection, is to highlight works of the past, presented with brandnew or restored prints, ready to enjoy a new career in film museums, theatres and DVD.



The principal screening room is the Buñuel theatre (Palais des Festivals, 5th floor).



This year, Cannes Classics will be honoured by the presence of Joanna Shimkus, wife of Sydney Poitier, for the screening of The Last Adventure (1967) by Robert Enrico where the actress of Canadian origin plays beside Alain Delon and Lino Ventura. She will be here to present the film, accompanied by the family of the director Robert Enrico.



The Festival has equally invited Danielle Darrieux who will come to present her film, Nouvelle Chance by Anne Fontaine (2006).



From May 18-27, Cannes Classics proposes:



1) Carol Reed (1906-2006)



First actor, Englishman Carol Reed moves on to direction and signs several masterpieces, including The Third Man (1949). From his rich filmography, the Festival de Cannes has chosen to present four of his films to be rediscovered thanks to 35mm and digital prints (restored by Granada International and the British Film Institute):



– The Fallen Idol (1948)



– Odd Man Out (1947)



– The Way Ahead (1944)



– Kid For Two Farthings (1955)



2) Norman McLaren (1914-1987)



After studying at the Glasgow School of Art, Norman McLaren emigrates to the United States in 1939 where he directs several abstract pictures, then teams up, in 1941 in Canada, with John Grieson, who founded the National Film Board of Canada. Norman McLaren, recognised as one of the masters of animation, worked for 40 years for the National Film Board, period during which he received more than 200 national and international prizes, including 147 for shorts.



Cannes Classics will propose a 90-minute programme with thirteen restored films, including Blinkity Blank, Golden Palm for Best Short in 1955, as well as Neighbors, Oscar for Best Short Film in 1953.

3) The Cinema of Alejandro Jodorowsky



Alejandro Jodorowsky, born in 1929 in Chile, known as novelist and comic scriptwriter, is likewise actor, author and director of several psychedelic films and the renowned "performances" of the troupe "Panique". He will be at the Festival to present two films:



– El Topo (1970): Buñuel theatre



– The Holy Mountain (1973): Beach Cinema



(Prints restored by ABKCO Films).



4) Tribute to the Nederland Filmmuseum



In 2005, the Filmmuseum of Amsterdam exhumed for Cannes Classics Beyond the Rocks, starring Gloria Swanson and Rudolf Valentino, a film lost for 75 years.



On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, Filmmuseum presents this year a rarity: one of the last silent films by Julien Duvivier, Mystery of the Eiffel Tower (1927).



Restored print presented in 35mm, with new music composed especially for the film.



5) Documentaries on the cinema



– Boffo! Tinseltown's Bombs and Blockbusters by Bill Couturié



The Festival de Cannes salutes the centenary of international show business daily, Variety, the oldest and the most famous of all film publications, by presenting Boffo! Tinseltown's Bombs and Blockbusters, an unreleased documentary by Bill Couturié. Among the great witnesses of this film which explores the reasons which lead to a work's success or failure: George Clooney, Sidney Pollack, Danny De Vito, etc.



– Once Upon a Time... Rome Open City by Marie Genin



Co-directed by Marie Genin and journalist Serge July, this unreleased documentary retraces the genesis and posterity of one of the founding films of Italian neo-realism. To complete the tribute to Roberto Rossellini, born in 1906 and who passed away in 1977, just a few weeks after having been the President of the Jury of the 30th Festival de Cannes, Rome Open City will be equally screened at the Beach Cinema.



‑John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and The Legend by Sam Pollard (2006)



Thanks to Warner which pursues its film heritage conservation policy, Cannes Classics offers a restored print (high definition digital) of The Searchers (1956).



An unreleased documentary: John Ford/John Wayne: The Filmmaker and The Legend by Sam Pollard (2006) will offer us a visit to that very special duo Ford/Wayne who gave us, in addition to The Searchers: Stagecoach, The Quiet Man and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. The screening will take place in the presence of members of the Ford and Wayne families.



– Marcello, una vita dolce by Mario Canale and Annarosa Morri (2006)



"Today still, to say 'Mastroianni' or 'Marcello' evokes a period: a world of bravery, beauty, charm, kindness and seduction": ten years after his disappearance, Marcello, una vita dolce brings Marcello Mastroianni back to life again.



Sergio Castellitto lends his voice to this story about a man, but equally about an era. The film reunites interviews of Mastroianni, extracts of his films, images taken on shoots, recollections of his daughters Barbara and Chiara, testimonies of actors, directors and people close to him, as well as images from an old documentary directed by Antonello Branca in 1964, where Mastroianni, at the height of his stardom, speaks about himself.



6) A selection of restored prints



And, as it is henceforth the tradition, Cannes Classics proposes a selection of ten new or restored prints (chosen among proposals from studios, production houses, film museums, national archives...) presented from May 18-27 in the Buñuel theatre. As a special 2006 event, three silent films are included in the selection.



– Kaze No tani No Naushika by Hayao Miyazaki (1984)



Adaptation by Hayao Miyazaki of the comic strip Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It is thanks to the success of this film, now rare, that Miyazaki was able to found the Studio Ghibli in Tokyo.

– The 14 Amazons /Shi si nu ying hao by Cheng Kang (1972).



Proposed by Wild Side Films which pursues its exploration of Asian action cinema.



– Blast of Silence by Allen Baron (1961)



Police intrigue, beauty of black and white, presence of New York, jazz. An unknown film since become cult, with the director as actor.



Print restored based on the original negative by Ronald Chammah and Ciné Classic.



– Oktyabr / October by S. Eisenstein (1926).



As a supplement to the exhibit of drawings by Eisenstein, presentation of a version unreleased in France in which we find two pieces by Chostakovitch. The screening will be preceded by Bezhin Meadow (1935) (Arkéïon). New print by Mosfilm Cinema Concern.



– Estate Violenta/Violent Summer by Valerio Zurlini (1959)



Following the re-release of Girl with a Suitcase, a second film by Valerio Zurlini.



Print restored based on the original negative and presented by Ad Vitam.



– Monte-Cristo by Henri Fescourt (1928)



This film, thought to have disappeared, is held in very high respect by Alain Resnais who saw it over and over again in his youth. Starring Jean Angelo, Lili Dagover, Gaston Modot and Pierre Batchef, Monte-Cristo was also one of last silent superproductions in the world.



Restored print presented in high definition digital.



– La Drôlesse / The Hussy by Jacques Doillon (1979)



Every year, the French Film Archives offers one of their restorations. This year, a film presented in Cannes in Competition in 1979.



Harvest: 3,000 Years / Mirt Sost Shi Amit by Haïlé Gerima (1975)



One of the key films of African cinema, Harvest: 3,000 Years is a socio-political picture of striking beauty which tells the story of a family of exploited farmers in confrontation with their landowner. Restored print by Cineteca Bologna.



– India Song by Marguerite Duras (1975).



The film will be presented by Michael Lonsdale and Jean Viala, Marguerite Duras' biographer. Digital restored print.



– Cabiria by Giovanni Pastrone (1914).



Mammoth restoration for this monumental film, cornerstone of the history of silent picture. Print restored by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema (Turin) and PresTech Film Laboratories Ltd. (London).



Last but not least, an exceptional screening, in the Debussy theatre, of the restored print of Platoon by Oliver Stone (1986).



The director will present upon this occasion and as a world's premiere 20 minutes from his new film World Trade Center.

Eka kerta yli 30 vuoteen kun ABKCO on tehnyt Jodorowskyn elokuville jotain muuta kuin pantannut niitä fanien ja ohjaajan harmiksi.



Klassikkosarja näyttää muutenkin ansiokkaalta, on Blast of Silencea, Miyazakia, SB-amatsoneja ja Platoon.

Tuostahan saadaan lisää suomalaisväriä, kun Minna Haapkylällä on rooli leffassa.

CANNES. Maanantai oli Aki Kaurismäen päivä Ranskan Rivieralla. Päivällä hän hauskuutti kansainvälistä mediaa sutkauksillaan, illalla oli Laitakaupungin valojen kutsuvierasensi-illan aika.



Vaikka ohjaaja oli Helsingissä ilmoittanut, ettei aio tällä kertaa tanssia punaisella matolla ”polkkaa tai masurkkaa”, tanssitta ei siirtyminen elokuvateatteriin onnistunut. Sytytettyään savukkeen ja annettuaan festivaali-tv:lle pienen haastattelun Kaurismäki Paula-vaimoineen tanssi muutaman tahdin Olavi Virran Sä et kyyneltä nää ‑tangoa, joka soi myös elokuvassa.



Aiemmin päivällä Kaurismäki hauskutti lehdistöä. Hän kertoi, miten Suomessa ollaan maailman rikkaimpia ja onnellisimpia. "Halusin osoittaa sen elokuvassa."



Hetken päästä hän myönsi, että Laitakaupungin valojen todellinen teema on yksinäisyys.



Kaurismäki nauratti perustelemalla elokuvansa nostalgista musiikkia: "Mitä vanhempi, sitä halvempi." Samalla Kaurismäki ilmoitti, että tango on suomalainen keksintö, jonka meikäläiset merimiehet veivät Argentiinaan.



Elokuvabisnestä Kaurismäki kommentoi toteamalla: "Kiinnostavaa Cannesin kilpasarjassa tänä vuonna on, että sekä Kaurismäen että Pedro Almodóvarin elokuvissa lauletaan samaa melodiaa, Carlos Gardelin Volveria."



Tämän yhteensattuman kommentointi oli Kaurismäelle todella mieluista.



"Pedro on koko uransa matkinut minua. Mutta hän on kiva kaveri, joten annan hänen tehdä sen. En sano Pedrosta pahaa sanaa, koska Espanja antoi Suomelle Euroviisuissa 8 pistettä."



"Hard Rock Hallelujah", Kaurismäki huudahti ja jatkoi:



"Pedro on tehnyt mestariteoksen, minä vastakohdan. Minä kamppailen täällä vain kirkon palkinnosta."



Ensimmäisessä lehdistönäytöksessä sunnuntai-iltana festivaalin toiseksi suurimmassa Debussy-salissa vastaanotto oli varovaisen hillittyä, mutta omaperäinen dialogi herätti myös useita nauruja.



Cannesin kilpailusarjassa kilpailee Kaurismäen rinnalla monia elokuvia, joiden tekijät on aiemmin palkittu samalla festivaalilla: Almodóvar, Moretti ja Loach.

Aki Kaurismäen elokuva Laitakaupungin valot esitettiin Cannesin elokuvajuhlilla kriitikoille ja toimittajille sunnuntai-iltana.

Kansainväliset kriitikot odottivat Kaurismäeltä paljon, koska suomalaisohjaaja voitti festivaalin kakkospalkinnon neljä vuotta sitten elokuvallaan Mies vailla menneisyyttä.



Uusi elokuva Laitakaupungin valot on Kaurismäen oman luonnehdinnan mukaan elokuva yksinäisyydestä – henkilöstä jolla ei ole ketään ja joka ei osaa edes uneksia kenestäkään.



Kansainvälisten kriitikoiden ensireaktioista paistoi hienoinen pettymys Laitakaupungin valoihin. Kaurismäen sanottiin toistavan itseään.



– Kaurismäki toistaa tyyliään jatkuvasti, ja minusta tuntuu, että hän ei ole kehittynyt paljoakaan. Tämä näyttää samalta kuin hänen 80-luvun elokuvansa, totesi Svenska Dagbladetin kriitikko Helena Lindblad.



– Täytyy myöntää, että se oli vähän tylsä. Tavallisesti pidän hänen elokuvistaan, mutta en päässyt tähän sisälle yhteä helposti. Ehkä se johtui näyttelijöistä, pohti Saksan tv:n toimittaja Ingrid Bartsch.



Laitakaupungin valot kirvoitti kuitenkin myös myönteisiä arvioita.



– Kaurismäki on yksi suosikkiohjaajistani. Hänen elokuvissaan on paljon venäläisiä viitteitä. Ja itsensä toistamisessa ei ole mitään pahaa. Suuret ohjaajat tekevät maanisesti samaa elokuvaa yhä uudestaan ja niin sen pitääkin olla, pohti Venäjän Newsweekin kriitikko Juri Gladilshikov.



– Mutta en usko, että Kaurismäki voittaa, koska Wong Kar Wain johtama tuomaristo todennäköisesti palkitsee uuden ohjaaja, Gladilshikov jatkoi.



Kaurismäki esiintyi maanantain lehdistötilaisuudessa tyylilleen uskollisesti lakonisia vitsejä laukoen. Kun Kaurismäeltä kysyttiin elokuvan sisältämästä vanhanaikaisesta tangomusiikista, hän vastasi:



– Pieni tuottaja sisälläni vastaa: mitä vanhempaa musiikkia, sitä halvempaa se on. Panen elokuvaan mitä tahansa peittääkseni vuoropuhelut, jottei kukaan joudu kuulemaan surkeita vuoropuheluita. Teen kaikkeni elokuvan tuhoamiseksi.

Almodovarin näyttelijäkaarti palkittiin



Tänä vuonna sekä parhaan naisnäyttelijän että parhaan miesnäyttelijän palkinnon saivat poikkeuksellisesti näyttelijäryhmät.



Parhaan naisnäyttelijän palkinnon sai espanjalaisen Pedro Almodovarin Volver-elokuvan näyttelijäkaarti.

Palkitut ovat Penelope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Duenas, Blanca Portillo, Yohana Cobo ja Chus Lampreave.



Cannesin ennakkosuosikkeihin kuulunut kolmen sukupolven naisista kertova elokuva palkittiin myös parhaasta käsikirjoituksesta.



Parhaan miesnäyttelijän palkinto meni ranskalais-arabialaisen ohjaajan Rachid Boucharebin Indigénes-elokuvan näyttelijäviisikolle.



Palkinnon saivat Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Sami Bouajila, Roschdy Zemil ja Bernard Blancan.



Indigénes kertoo toisessa maailmansodassa taistelleista Ranskan Pohjois-Afrikan siirtomaiden sotilaista.

Markus Määttänen kritisoi tämänpäiväisessä Aamulehdessä Ken Loachin The Wind that Shakes the Barleyn Cannes-voittoa otsikolla "Mitä Won Kar-wain päässä liikkuu?" Tässä ote tekstistä:

"Ehkä kysessä oli Cannes-kirous. Se haihdutti parhaat filmit pois tuomariston mielestä ja huitoi palkinnot melko keskinkertaiselle, muutaman shokin sisältävälle inhimilliselle draamalle. Cannesin festivaali on kuuluisa vastaavista nahkapäätöksistä."

Markus Määttänen kritisoi tämänpäiväisessä Aamulehdessä Ken Loachin The Wind that Shakes the Barleyn Cannes-voittoa otsikolla "Mitä Won Kar-wain päässä liikkuu?"

Veikkaan kyllä, että Loach ei ollut Won Kar Wain valinta. Kun katsoo juryn kokoonpanoa, niin siinähän istui tänä vuonna peräti viisi about saman sukupolven näyttelijää (joista vieläpä kaksi brittiä): Helena Bonham Carter, Monica Bellucci, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth ja Zhang Ziyi. Nämä ovat todennäköisesti diganeet Loachin hyvin näyteltyä peruslaatudraamaa ja älyttömät näyttelijäpalkintokompromissit on selvästi myös jyrätty samalta suunnalta. Wong Kar Wai olisi varmaan mieluummin antanut palmun Dumontin Flandersille ja jättänyt Loachille Grand Prixin. Siinä olisi ollut sekä enemmän järkeä että munaa.

Heh, jos Loachin elokuva on nahkapäätös niin se taso on ollut kyllä aika raju. Ken Loach on ilmeisesti Euroopan Ron Howard?

Veikkaan kyllä, että Loach ei ollut Won Kar Wain valinta. Kun katsoo juryn kokoonpanoa, niin siinähän istui tänä vuonna peräti viisi about saman sukupolven näyttelijää (joista vieläpä kaksi brittiä): Helena Bonham Carter, Monica Bellucci, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth ja Zhang Ziyi.
