"Over at Redemption/Salvation's website there comes some bittersweet Jean Rollin news. With Redemption's bosses attending the Cannes film festival, they've been running a daily diary from the French film festival. According to the diary, Redemption arrived several days before the festival began. The purpose was to iron out some problems the company has had with legendary French horror director Jean Rollin. It seems he wasn't happy with Redemption issuing his titles in England and in the States (via Redemption/Image). Apparently the disagreements between them have dated back to 1998--with Redemption proving they had the legal rights to release many of his most vital titles. According to Redemption they expected the meetings to be nasty and not very productive. In fact, the opposite has proven to be true. Jean Rollin has decided he wants all his films "in one place, with the negatives protected and made safe for the future." After a few dinners, Jean Rollin and Redemption have struck a deal.
Redemption now owns all of Jean Rollin's movies and, in the coming months, will be releasing remastered versions of KILLING CARS, FIANCE OF DRACULA, LITTLE ORPHAN VAMPIRES, COUNTESS IXE, SHAMELESS YOUNG GIRLS, GRAPES OF DEATH, ROSE DE FER, PHANTASM and THE ESCAPEES IN ENGLAND. Hopefully, these titles will also be coming out in the States. There will also be the definitive Jean Rollin box set. For this, Jean Rollin will direct an exclusive short film. He will also do commentaries for all the films in the box set. These will be recorded in his native French--so he can speak more naturally, but also be subtitled. In the box will be a book on Rollin's work and life. Jean Rollin will contribute personal photos which no one has ever seen. If this isn't exciting enough, Redemption will also be financing Jean Rollin's forthcoming TRANSFIGURATION OF THE NIGHT. It will be shot in France and Italy. Remember, I said this was bittersweet. Jean Rollin has had health problems for a number of years--but, apparently, things have taken a turn for the worse. The reason he wanted Redemption to control his titles, he wanted to simplify things for when he's gone. Now, everything will be in one place. TOTN will be his swan song. Following its competition, there will be no more films from Jean Rollin."
